Our History: In September of 2000, a group of concerned and dedicated community leaders in Branson opened a satellite office of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks (BBBSO), to serve children facing adversity in Stone and Taney counties. This Springfield affiliated office opened in 1983, and collectively BBBSO supports more than 1000 matches each year. Our Programs: Bigs are carefully matched with their Littles and spend up to 8 hours a month in activities of interest to both the adult volunteer and the child being served. The match is supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff who offer training and ideas for low to no cost activities for the match. New to Stone and Taney Counties is the Amachi program, mentoring children of incarcerated parents. Statistics show a child whose parent is incarcerated is 70% more likely to go to prison themselves while more than 2/3 of juveniles in the criminal justice system are children of prisoners. Our mentoring program will provide these children with opportunities to develop a trusting relationship with a supportive, caring adult and a stable environment that can promote healthy values and strong families. Our Needs: The agency is always in need of volunteers to become Bigs in our program. Volunteers need to be 18 years or older and be able to spend 8 hours a month with a child. Call Jean at (417) 386-4090 or (417) 294-5198 or email jroach@bigbro.com to receive more information on volunteering. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Stone and Taney Counties is in need of monetary support to recruit, train, and supervise the caring, adult role models. Big Brothers Big Sisters can provide empirical data that children in our program show marked improvement when participating in community based mentoring programs. With 27.8% of the children in Taney County currently being raised in a single parent home, 52.7% enrolled in free/reduced lunch, and 23.5% of the children born to mothers without a high school diploma, the need for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks/Taney and Stone Counties is greater than ever. While there are other tutoring programs in Stone and Taney Counties, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks is the only agency offering one-to-one mentoring services to children facing adversity in the area. Special Events: Bowl for Kids' Sake is the largest event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Stone and Taney County and is held each year in February and March. Stay tuned for more information.
