"A community that gives to you, you should give back to that community." - Kevin Dunaway
Some people lead such significant lives through their ideas, passion, and hard work that they don’t need an award to shine. Our board member Kevin Dunaway is one of these people—except that he was also selected for Biz 417’s Best Board Members in 2016. For Kevin, his decision to work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks (BBBSO) comes from his passion for kids. The most important job he’s ever had is being a father. But this passion doesn’t stop with just his role as a father.
“A community that gives to you, you should give back to that community, and there is no better group of individuals to give back to in a community than to the youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters has called out to my heart. We develop relationships between Bigs and Littles. It’s vitally important as a parent who your child is spending time with and what kind of input they’re getting. There is no better way to ensure a quality environment than through Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring program.”
In interacting with Kevin, it doesn’t take long to see how much joy and fulfillment he gets from driving the BBBSO mission. For him, it’s not about titles. He’s all about winning and doing more for the kids each year, whether that looks like co-chairing two of the biggest years on record for Taste of the Ozarks, increasing his give-get as a board member, or helping new board members succeed.
“Before becoming a board member, I knew there was an impact through mentoring—because of course there is—but learning that youth graduate high school, go on to college, stay out of jail or prison through mentoring. That’s powerful.”
“My mom was my mentor growing up. I would talk to her about things that bothered me. She gave me good advice. In my professional career, community involvement, and with the firm, Jerry Redfern and Thom Field functioned as mentors for me. They gave me their time and served as good role models for me. I learned a lot from those two guys”
BBBSO is currently seeking enthusiastic board members, mission-centric donors, and mentors. Being a mentor is as easy as 30 minutes once a week. Find out more at www.BigBro.com/BeABig
