|This is 33 years in the making...|

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks (BBBSO) has just been named one of the top 16 agencies out of over 325 agencies nationwide. The Gold Standard Award is a way for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to recognize agencies that have demonstrated exemplarily high achievement and measured quality outcomes for the children and families they serve in their communities.
“We couldn’t have achieved any of this without the thousands upon thousands of good people in the Ozarks that have chosen to be a part of something bigger than themselves by giving their time, their resources, their money, and even their hearts to help our kids,“ said Katie Davis, CEO. “It’s a tremendous and humbling honor.”
BBBSO was the only affiliate agency in Missouri to receive this elite distinction, and it is the only affiliate agency to practice the Great Game of Business, which they see as being instrumental in their success.
After fully implementing the Great Game of Business in January of 2015, BBBSO raised over one million dollars (a 22% increase in revenue) and created 17% more life-changing friendships between Bigs with Littles.
“This recognition validates both the 33 years of tireless work and the decisions we’ve made to think differently in order to grow revenue and to improve the quality and number of matches we make, which is the most important thing we do,” said Marshall Kinne, Board President. “I’m truly honored to get to serve this mission.”
Despite these inspiring numbers and accolades, the challenges that Springfield faces with impoverished families (the highest in the state at 26%), incarcerated parents, and food insecurity does not give BBBSO any time for celebration.
According to Rob Blevins, Community Relations Coordinator, “We have a desperate need for men in the Springfield area to become mentors. There is a disproportionate amount of boys that don’t have a good male role model in their lives, especially in Ozark and Nixa. It takes a real Missouri man to step up and teach a man.”
BBBSO will be recognized in front of their peers during the 2016 Big Brothers Big Sisters National Conference in Orlando, Florida this June. This award also places them in the running for Agency of the Year and Board of the Year, which will be announced at the conference.
BBBSO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and United Way partner agency that believes that every child can succeed and even thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income families or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters supports life changing friendships between professionally screened adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles).
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support, which independent studies prove
helps Littles perform better in school, avoid risky behaviors, and grow up to be productive, engaged citizens.
